Our Power To Change: Hawaii's Momentous Energy Transformation

Overview

The Vision

The Hawaiian’s historically sustained a large population of over 1 million throughout these islands with no import of food, energy or much of anything else. Of course that was in a different pre-industrial era in an incredibly sensitized culture that understood ‘pono’ in terms of deep relationship to the life of the aina. Now we are in a post-industrial, information era and we have the potential to find a balance with nature that includes many of the benefits of energy intensive living that we all have embraced.

To achieve this we have to use the wisdom of our home culture coupled with the application of a dynamic array of new renewable energy technologies, green design of homes, offices and transportation, as well as developing a our new Hawaiian multi-culture based on locally grown food, tradition, and expression. Aloha Aina is the essence of sustainable life on these islands.

Here is the vision. It is not new but its time has come. Hawaii, our island home in the ocean of water, is a microcosm of Earth, our island planet in the ocean of space.  The clear perimeter of Hawaii forces us to seek solutions that other land connected countries will only face in the future.

Therefore what Hawaii learns and applies in the area of energy sustainability will benefit the rest of the world. Hawaii has the opportunity to lead and we are seeing the seeds of that leadership being planted in fertile island soil and beginning to sprout all around us.

Here’s some good news. What we are talking about is not only pono and necessary but it will save each of us and all us money, provide a whole range of new employment for our people, and is something that can be understood and practiced at the ohana level as well in the commercial markets and government.

This series of articles will explore the The Shocking Need for Change, Hawaii’s Energy Leaders in Government, Industry, Culture and Education, The Conservation Path, The Innovation Path,  The Peoples Power ( what you and I can do now ).
